Respira hondo / Take a deep breath

I relax, grab my book, sit on the Couch and put my feet on the coffee table (exactly as I was forbidden as a child, now the table is mine and I enjoy the way I want), it’s Friday after all and I deserve it. In the background I hear a pum pum pum. “It’s Simon” I think tenderly, “he is bouncing the soccer ball in his bedroom”. I smile and I go back to my book. The pump pum pum goes on. “It’s been like twenty minutes and he’s still bouncing that ball” I tell to myself (if you could hear my thoughts you’d know that my tone has, by now, shifted from tender to irritated. I’m not the perfect mother after all, even though I try). How doesn’t he get tired of bouncing the ball, alone, in his bedroom.

Simon, my son, the one with constant questions, the deep thoughts, the faithful companion, he is almost a teenager and I cannot help but ask to myself if when boys get hormonal they get a ‘lobotomy’. Just like girls get a spring that makes them roll their eyes involuntarily.

It’s as if he left his brain soaking in bleached water overnight and some of the essential commands got erased. Like the ones that manage memory and hearing for example. I don’t know exactly when, but it happened. Just like that, from one day to the other. He is still the same though. The boy with a big heart, deep conversations and endless questions. The change is almost imperceptible to the human eye. I cannot help but wonder if this just a free sample of what is really coming ahead?

Exhibit A:
Schedule on his bedroom door so he can check it every morning and he doesn't forget to take things to School, which he forgets anyways.

Exhibit B:
Fire is one of the main attractions. Plastic soldiers are for melting not playing.

Exhibit C:
Shoes he left outside, it rained on them twice and he steps on them every time he goes outside to the yard (several times a day)
