Yo y mi Arbolito de Navidad / Me and my Christmas Tree

Last night, when everyone was asleep, I was contemplating our Christmas tree and I started thinking abou the meaning that the Tree has in our family. As we are not religious, for us, it's the biggest Symbol of Christmas. The whole thing is a ritual. From the choosing and buying of the tree to the decorating and the disassembling (well the last one is more a chore). It’s like this for my family now and it was like this for my family while growing up. It’s more about the spiritual connection and how we come together as a family, sharing a special moment that brings us joy and warmths our souls.

Its been a couple of days since we put ours together . It looks great. For the past few years, Sofia and Simon had done it themselves while I try to clean up after them and Mr C tries to give some input that gets lost behind the Christmas Carols playing on the radio.

I look at the kids, amazed at how how much they’ve grown, while trying to soothe the urge I feel of moving all the ornaments around and hung them the way I want… I must admit its hard, but I try. Every now and then I throw some ideas like “The larger ornaments on the bottom and the smallest on top”, they say “yes Mami” and still do what they want. I must admit it ends up looking even better.

It’s a colorful tree, one without a plan or a theme. A tree that has taken shape and grown along us. It’s like when you organize a dinner party and you think “These people have nothing in common and they don’t even know each other” but it ends up being a great evening and everyone has a blast.

I could say, almost with certainty, that every ornament has a memory or a story behind it. A story that, by now, even Sofia and Simon know better that I do and they tell them to me as they hung each and every one on the tree.

Algunos adornos los colecciono, como las teteras / Some ornaments I collect, like Teapots
